The figure, dressed in all-black garments and carrying something reminiscent of a scythe, could be seen hurrying across a doorway from right to left.
The sighting quickly went viral, with ‘Grim Reaper at Westminster Abbey’ trending on social media. However, it is likely that the figure was simply a robed participant of the proceedings who happened to be hidden in shadow.

The coincidence of the figure’s appearance and a particularly appropriate piece of music from the orchestra added to the amusing nature of the sighting.

Despite the Grim Reaper sighting, the proceedings went smoothly, and the day marked the beginning of King Charles III’s reign at the age of 74 after his mother, Queen Elizabeth, passed away at the age of 96 in September 2022.
The coronation showcased up to 15 working members of the Royal Family, including the Prince and Princess of Wales, and embraced the proud diversity of modern-day Britain.
Around 100 heads of state and representatives from 203 countries attended the coronation, and the streets of London were filled with tens of thousands of people who had been camping out for days to witness the event.
