A new study has found that patients who have had a near-death experience (NDE) do not necessarily have a transformative outlook on life a year after the experience.
The study monitored 19 patients who had an NDE in an intensive care unit (ICU) and followed up with them 12 months later.
The original study looked at 126 patients who were admitted to five ICUs in Belgium for various illnesses.
Of these patients, 15% or 19 people had an NDE and were further studied.

The patients were interviewed three to seven days after being discharged from the hospital about dissociative experiences and personal beliefs.
They experienced dissociative symptoms such as feeling disconnected from themselves, feeling little to no pain, and feeling uncertain about their identity, as well as increased spiritual and personal well-being.
However, a year later, there was no significant association with quality of life despite previous reports of NDEs being transformative.
Dr Bruce Greyson, who developed the NDE scale used in the study, has found that 10 to 20% of people whose hearts have stopped have an NDE.
The results differ from a 2022 study conducted by Greyson that found significant differences in quality of life even 20 years after the NDE.
The researchers of the Critical Care study suggest that more research is needed to confirm these findings.
