The Island of Dolls is a small, uninhabited island near Mexico City, Mexico. It is home to hundreds of dolls that have been hung from the trees and tied to the branches. The dolls are said to be cursed, and many believe that they are haunted. Some say that the dolls are possessed by the spirit of a young girl who drowned in the river nearby. Whatever the reason may be, the island is definitely creepy! If you’re brave enough, you can visit it yourself and see for yourself… just make sure you don’t get too close to the dolls!
The island’s history is shrouded in mystery, but it is believed that it was once the home of a hermit named Don Julian Santana Barrera. Barrera was said to have been driven mad by the death of a young girl who drowned in one of the canals. He began collecting dolls and placing them around the island as a way to appease her spirit.

In 2001, Don Julian Santana Barrera passed away. His body was discovered… you guessed it drowned in the canal, in the exact place he always said he’d seen the little girl. In response, tourists began flocking to the island to pay tribute. They brought dolls of their own, and to this day people honor both Santana Barrera and the girl (whether she was real or not) by hanging up dolls in tribute. You can do so too. Many ferries stop here, making it a macabre must-see on any tour of these ancient Aztec canals.
