An enormous swarm of locusts filled the skies over parts of the Yucatan state in Mexico last Tuesday afternoon, alarming residents and prompting speculation that the event was linked to biblical End Times prophecies.
The swarm was so dense that it blocked out sunlight in Merida and surrounding towns, darkening the middle of the day and concerning citizens who looked up to see the source. Video circulating on social media showed thousands upon thousands of locusts blanketing the skies.
Some religious commentators pointed to the locust swarm as a potential omen, noting biblical passages stating plagues of locusts can be a sign of the apocalypse. This stirred dread among an already rattled populace caught under the flying insects.
While the swarm only lasted a few days and did not pose a major threat to agriculture, it nonetheless evoked unease and apocalyptic visions, especially for those directly in the path of the locust cloud. Experts advised that the phenomena was likely part of the species’ migration pattern rather than anything supernatural.
Regardless of the cause, the people of Yucatan will not soon forget the days when locusts darkened the skies and left many wondering if these were the End Times the Bible foretold. The scene certainly gave onlookers a glimpse of one legendary harbinger of apocalypse and stoked fears that continue to spread online.
