An unusual quarter caught the eye of the internet after a Michigan man named Jordan posted his alien coin find on Reddit. Jordan, or u/albanesegummies327 as he is known on Reddit, was going through a roll of quarters and thought he might have just stumbled upon a government conspiracy.
Jordan told Newsweek “I was inspecting a large bag of quarter rolls, opening them one by one to look for older pieces with high silver content. In one of the rolls, I was immediately startled by an odd coin featuring the bust of an extraterrestrial. It stood out in stark contrast to the bust of Washington present on the other coins.”
As one would imagine the comments started to roll in. One Redditor Commented “Oh man! That’s nice. It looks like it was designed after hobo nickels.”
The term hobo nickel comes from The early 1900s when hobos or homeless people would alter coins by engraving their own designs in them. Even today modern artists are creating their own version of the hobo nickel.
Other Redditors Commented that they wanted to see what was on the backside of the coin. Jordan replied, “The backside shows the date of the apocalypse, only those who own it can see it.”
Jordan went on to say that he did take the alien coin to the local pawn shop. “He reassured me that Federal Reserve isn’t being run by aliens and that the coin is all that rare. He identified it as a hobo nickel, worth around $10 to $20 to collectors,” Jordan explained. “Although I was rather disappointed that I hadn’t stumbled across proof of a government conspiracy or something valuable, the truth is still out there,” Jordan said. “And I’ll continue to search coin rolls to find it.”
