A Missouri man has claimed a new world record for the longest journey by pumpkin boat. Steve Kueny of Lebanon grew a giant 1,208-pound pumpkin, hollowed it out into a makeshift vessel, and paddled it 38.4 miles down the Missouri River on October 13, 2023.
Dubbing his pumpkin boat “Huckle Berry,” Kueny embarked on the 11-hour voyage from Kansas City to Napoleon accompanied by fellow paddlers from the Paddle KC club. They provided support and documented the record-setting paddle.
The previous record was set in 2022 by Nebraskan Duane Hansen, who paddled a pumpkin boat 37.5 miles. Kueny surpassed that mark by nearly a mile, pending official certification from Guinness World Records.
Kueny’s crafty use of homegrown gourd has earned him the pumpkin paddling world record and cemented his place in the books for creative vegetable-based watercraft.
