A family in India was recently startled to receive a traffic camera photo along with a citation for not wearing seatbelts that appears to show a ghostly figure in the backseat of their car.
The image was captured last month by a new ‘smart’ traffic camera with AI capabilities in the state of Kerala. It shows driver Adithyan and his wife in the front seats without seatbelts on. But in the backseat is the faint but unmistakable outline of what looks like an older woman.

While Adithyan and his wife admitted to the seatbelt offense and paid the fine, they had no explanation for the third person in the photo. The spectral image has since gone viral on social media in India, with many claiming it is definitive proof of the supernatural.
Officials have pledged to investigate the bizarre photo further, but have suggested it could just be a reflection or one of the couple’s children made to look ghostly by shadows and light. But the public by and large rejects these explanations, standing firm that this is a true documentation of paranormal activity caught on camera.
For now the identity of the backseat phantom remains a mystery. But the viral snap has certainly startled and captured the imagination of many in India who believe ghosts walk among us. Officials have their work cut out for them in determining if this eerie image is just an optical illusion or if there are spectral beings hovering unseen in motor vehicles.
