The Bermuda Triangle, a region encompassing Bermuda, the Bahamas, and Miami, has long been shrouded in mystery and associated with inexplicable events. From the unexplained disappearances of military aircraft during World War II to the strange encounters reported by sailors, this infamous area has captured the imagination of the world. In 1978, Greek merchant marine radio operator Polycarp Spentzas had a profoundly strange experience while aboard the vessel “Pothiti SWJC,” adding his account to the long list of puzzling incidents in the Bermuda Triangle.
An Unforgettable Journey Begins
Setting sail from Porto Matanzas, Cuba, bound for Algiers, the crew aboard the “Pothiti SWJC” noticed something unusual unfolding. Despite the ship’s instruments indicating a constant speed of 10 to 11 nautical miles per hour, the officers on the bridge felt as though they were sailing at an alarmingly high velocity. The perplexing phenomenon prompted them to question whether an error had occurred in timing, but the ship continued to surge through the waves with extraordinary swiftness.
The Bizarre Events Unfold
Around noon, as the captain’s health declined, a Pakistani sailor was put at the helm. Meanwhile, the ship’s electrician made a startling discovery: all the clocks on board had inexplicably advanced by two hours. Adding to the confusion, the compass, designed to be gyroscopic and impervious to electromagnetic fields, began spinning erratically. Only by engaging the autopilot could the ship maintain a steady course.
A UFO Sighting
The most extraordinary occurrence took place in the late afternoon when Spentzas and the cook were engrossed in a game of backgammon. Suddenly, their attention was drawn to a large, white unidentified flying object hovering to the northwest of the ship, followed by two smaller objects. Though Spentzas suspected they might be American experiments, his attempts to corroborate the sighting with others on the ship proved fruitless. As time appeared to warp and the crew experienced the effects of acceleration, Spentzas noticed an abnormal increase in the speed of Morse code signals received through the radio.
The Crew’s Puzzling Encounters
The following day, the crew members recounted their individual encounters with the inexplicable phenomena. One sailor found his cigarette burning out immediately after lighting it, while the second mate discovered that time had inexplicably shifted, leaving him with insufficient sleep. Additionally, the crew experienced bradycardia (abnormally slow heartbeat) and hypothermia, further deepening the mystery surrounding the events.
Seeking Explanations
In the aftermath of these strange occurrences, Spentzas embarked on a quest to unravel the enigma. He theorized that gravitational time dilation, influenced by gravitational waves emitted during UFO acceleration, caused biochemical changes in the crew’s bodies. Drawing upon the theories of renowned physicists Niels Bohr and Albert Einstein, Spentzas hypothesized that these events were a result of the extraordinary forces at play within the Bermuda Triangle.

The Unending Mysteries
The tale of Polycarp Spentzas and his fellow crew members adds another layer of intrigue to the mystique surrounding the Bermuda Triangle. As the years pass, questions remain unanswered, leaving us to wonder if further evidence will ever emerge to shed light on the inexplicable phenomena in this turquoise-hued stretch of the Atlantic Ocean. Until then, the mysteries of the Bermuda Triangle continue to captivate our collective imagination, reminding us of the vast unknown that still exists within our world.
